Weight Loss and Serving Sizes
Serving sizes have a direct correlation with weight loss and weight control. You've all heard the phrase "It's not what you eat rather how much you eat." What is a Serving Size? According to the National Institute of Health (NIH) a "serving" is a unit of measure used to describe the amount of food recommended from each food group. Serving sizes are posted on the Nutrition Facts panel of packaged food, the Food Guide Pyramid and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. According to WebMD in collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic state, "The best way to determine the amount of food in a given serving is to look at the Nutrition Facts label and measure it out." Although this may not be practical or fun practice will help you to "eyeball" the correct amount of food. Our Healthy Plate can act as a guide in knowing whether there is too much or too little food on your plate. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Agriculture (USDA) jointly publishes Dietary Guidelines for Americans. These guidelines for ages 2 and over include caloric intake, servings by food group and serving size. Please view the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Weight and Nutrition*.
